Good to know

Before you use it

  • Rows sit at different levels: a county's total, its private and government totals, private sectors (two-digit NAICS) and private subsectors (three-digit). Don't add levels together; filter on Ownership and IndustryLevel first. IndustryCode is empty on total rows.
  • 116,386 rows are suppressed: BLS withholds the figures to protect individual employers, mostly in small subsectors. Their employment and pay are empty, not zero, and the number of establishments is still shown.
  • Employment is the year's average of monthly jobs covered by unemployment insurance, about 95 percent of U.S. jobs; most self-employed people aren't included. AverageAnnualPay is total wages divided by that average. EmploymentLQ is the location quotient: 2.0 means the industry's share of the county's jobs is twice its share nationally. EmploymentChangePct is the change from 2024.
  • CountyFIPS matches the county demographics collection, and IndustryCode the NAICS collection. Connecticut's rows are its planning regions, and Kalawao County, Hawaii, is counted with Maui.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What you can build with it

  • Market research. Compare how big an industry is from county to county.
  • Site selection. Find counties with the workforce a business needs.
  • Economic development. Track a region's jobs and pay against its neighbors.
  • Dashboards. Map employment and pay by industry.
