Good to know

Before you use it

  • This is a sample survey, not every government: it covers 24,470 of the roughly 90,000 U.S. local governments, including all the large ones. A government that isn't listed wasn't in the sample; it doesn't mean zero.
  • ResponseStatus says whether the government reported its figures, or the Census Bureau estimated some or all of them because it didn't respond. FiscalYearEnd shows when each government's fiscal 2024 ended.
  • Amounts are in dollars and follow the Census Bureau's standard definitions, which can differ from a government's own budget. TotalSpending includes utilities, interest and aid paid to other governments. Each function column (Education, Police and so on) includes operations, construction and aid for that purpose.
  • Municipality covers cities, towns and villages. Special districts serve one purpose, such as water or fire protection (SpecialDistrictFunction). PlaceGEOID matches GEOID in the U.S. cities collection and CountyFIPS the county collections. Names are in capitals, as the Census Bureau publishes them.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.
