Good to know

Before you use it

  • Pay is national, before taxes, for wage and salary workers. It leaves out the self-employed and the military, so occupations such as legislators, fishers and military officers have no pay figures.
  • BLS reports a few occupations together. Those combined codes have their own rows with the pay, and each occupation inside one names it in PayReportedWith. So does an occupation BLS reports only at its broad group.
  • Some occupations have only annual pay (most teachers) or only hourly pay (actors, dancers, musicians); the other figure is empty.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What you can build with it

  • Salary tools. Show what a job pays nationally, with a realistic range.
  • Job boards and HR systems. Classify postings and roles with standard titles and codes.
  • Career guidance. Compare occupations by pay, size and what the work involves.
  • Research. Roll occupations up to their broad, minor or major group.
