Good to know

Before you use it

  • Only schools open in 2024-25 are included. Names, districts and counts are as each state reports them, so some states use capital letters.
  • Teachers are full-time equivalents. StudentTeacherRatio is enrollment divided by teachers, so a virtual school or one that shares teachers can look unusual.
  • FreeReducedLunch is the number of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, the usual measure of a school's poverty level. Some states don't report it.
  • NCESSchoolID and NCESDistrictID are the federal IDs, so you can join this to other Department of Education data.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What you can build with it

  • School finders. Search schools by city, ZIP code or district, or put them on a map.
  • Real estate. Show the schools near a home, with grades and size.
  • Education products. Let teachers and families pick their school from a clean list.
  • Research. Compare size, staffing and poverty across districts and states.
