Good to know

Before you use it

  • PassengerTrips counts boardings: a rider who transfers from a bus to a train counts twice. It isn't a count of people.
  • An agency's figures add up its modes. Small and rural agencies report less detail, so some figures are empty. FareRevenue is fares earned in the year (fares applied to operations for agencies that don't report earnings), and OperatingExpenses is the total cost of operating the service.
  • ServiceType is Directly operated by the agency, Purchased transportation from a contractor, Taxi, or Transportation network company (ride-hailing). The address and coordinates are the agency's headquarters, not its service area.
  • NTDID is the FTA's ID for the agency. Agencies in Puerto Rico and the territories are left out.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What you can build with it

  • Planning and consulting. Compare ridership, service and cost across systems.
  • Suppliers. Size fleets and markets by mode.
  • Civic dashboards. Show how a local system compares with its peers.
  • Research. Study cost per trip and how much fares cover.
