Good to know

Before you use it

  • The Census Bureau estimates population only for incorporated places, and for Hawaii's communities. Most unincorporated places have no population here.
  • County is the one where most of a city's people live. For an unincorporated place it is the county at the place's center.
  • GEOID is the Census place code, so you can join this to other Census data.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What people build with it

  • City pickers. Fill a city dropdown or autocomplete, filtered by state.
  • Maps and store locators. Plot places or find the nearest one with the coordinates.
  • Joining Census data. Use GEOID and CountyFIPS to bring in other federal statistics.
  • Analysis. Compare growth, size and density across places.
