Good to know

Before you use it

  • A recall that covers a model and year doesn't mean every one of those vehicles is affected, or that a particular vehicle hasn't been repaired. To check a specific vehicle, look up its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  • PotentiallyAffected is the manufacturer's estimate of units involved. ModelCount is the number of make, model and year rows the recall has in Models; join on RecallNumber.
  • DoNotDrive and ParkOutside mark NHTSA's most urgent advisories. RecallType is Vehicle, Equipment, Tire or Child seat; 64 campaigns with other NHTSA codes are listed as Other.
  • Older records are in capitals, as NHTSA published them. Makes and models are as each recall names them, so matching them to other sources, such as the fuel economy collection, takes care.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What you can build with it

  • Car apps. Show the recalls for a make, model and year.
  • Fleets and dealers. Review the recall history of the vehicles you manage.
  • Research. Study defects by component, manufacturer or decade.
  • Journalism. Find the largest and most recent recalls.
