For spreadsheet users

Let the sheet
look it up.

You have a column of industry codes. You need readable names. Add a reference sheet once, then let a formula match the labels for you.

A reference tab, not another typing job

Build the lookup
in three steps.

The U.S. NAICS 2022 Industry Sectors list pairs sectorCode with sectorName. It covers top-level sectors, not detailed six-digit industries.

  1. Import the reference file.

Import the CSV into a tab named Sectors. Keep sectorCode as text. In the current export, column A is ID, B is sectorCode, and C is sectorName; confirm the headers after import.

  2. Match the code exactly.

In your working sheet, put a sector code in A2 as text. Use this formula in B2 and fill down:

    =XLOOKUP(A2, Sectors!B:B, Sectors!C:C, "Check code", 0)

Use Excel or Google Sheets with XLOOKUP support. Your spreadsheet’s regional settings may use semicolons in place of commas.

  3. Resolve unmatched values.

Filter for “Check code.” Look for spaces, missing hyphens, number-versus-text differences, or codes absent from your reference file. The free sample is a subset, so it will not match every valid sector.

When you need the whole list

Take your project
past the sample.

The sample lets you test the formula. A pass gives you the complete sector list for codes beyond the sample.
