Find what changed between two versions

Compare an original document with a revised version to see additions, removals, and changed words. This is useful for configuration files, release notes, API responses, and ordinary writing. Unlike comparing list membership, text comparison keeps sequence and repeated lines significant. The two inputs stay editable, and the result places the versions beside each other so you can review a change in context. Files are read on your device and comparison runs in your browser.

Spot a changed instruction

Input

Keep leading zeros.

Result

--- Original
+++ Revised
-Keep leading zeros.
+Keep leading zeros intact.

The revised version adds one word. The comparison highlights that word within the changed line, while the downloadable report uses minus and plus prefixes to identify removed and added lines.

Check whether two versions match

Input

name=MySafeInfo

Result

No differences found.

Identical inputs produce a clear no-differences result. This does not test whether the configuration is valid; it checks whether the two versions differ under the selected comparison settings.

How to compare text

  1. Paste the first version into Original text and the second into Revised text. Either side may be empty to review a complete addition or removal.
  2. Choose whether spaces at line edges should matter. This option does not ignore changed words or rearranged lines. Windows and Unix line endings are treated alike.
  3. Run Compare text, or leave automatic updates on. Use Changes only to hide unchanged rows, and Next change to move through the visible comparison.
  4. Review highlighted words and line numbers. Copy or download the complete text report when you need a record of the comparison.

Text diff questions

How is this different from Compare lists?

Compare lists finds unique values present in one list, the other, or both. Text diff compares versions in order, preserving repeated lines and identifying changed words. Use the list tool for membership questions and this tool when reviewing edits.

Does comparison upload either version?

No. Both inputs and the comparison remain in the browser. Local files are opened on your device. No account, Data Pass, or external comparison service is needed, and the page does not save your text in browser storage.

What do the colors and symbols mean?

Removed text appears on the original side with a minus sign. Added text appears on the revised side with a plus sign. Stronger highlights identify changed words within paired lines. Symbols and labels make the result understandable without relying on color alone.

Can I compare large files or PDF documents?

Use plain text files or paste an excerpt. The tool accepts up to 2 MB and 20,000 lines combined, with a bounded preview and processing time. It does not extract text from PDF, Word, or other binary document formats.

A readable comparison, not a document merger

The preview shows at most 1,200 comparison rows and limits very large text fragments. Copy and download retain the full report within the output limit. Very different inputs may need smaller excerpts. A missing final line break can count as a change. The report is for review, not a patch guaranteed to apply through a source-control command.
